RMF 2 1/2 litres represent the ultimate development of the twin cam traditional Rileys. As just 1050 RMFs were made their combination of impeccable handling, superb power unit and handsome lines established them amongst the best looking and most roadworthy sports saloons of the 1950s.
The 102 bhp 2 1/2 litre power unit enables top speeds in excess of 90mph, translating into 70mph cruising speeds today with the ability to cope with all hills and road conditions.
Rack and pinion steering, torsion bar front suspension, 4 wheel hydraulic brakes, open prop shaft and strengthened rear axle, result in ‘best of the breed’ handling, with no half shaft worries.
The car has an excellent sound body, free of creaks and rattles, refinished in the colour scheme featured in Riley adverts of the time of Old English White over black. The paintwork is in good condition with only minor blemishes consistent with road use and the roof is likewise in great condition and the stitching of the seams are sound and true.
The engine is in very good order, running smoothly with excellent oil pressure. The clutch assembly, centre plate and release bearing have been replaced in the past 4,000 miles. The brake cylinders have been re-sleeved in stainless steel and rear brake linings renewed. All radiator and heater hoses have been replaced. A new set of Avon tyres was fitted 2,000 miles ago. The synchromesh gearbox and rear axle are silent and function well.
RPP 187 has a rare tachometer option (updated to an electronic function) incorporating the electrically wound clock which actually works. As a late RMF the car is also fitted with a fresh air heater to keep the cabin fresh and warm, avoiding the steaming up issues of earlier recirculating systems.
Original and unmolested, this RMF is a favourite car to go anywhere in style and comfort. It has participated in the London to Edinburgh rally, and covered more than 5,000 miles to events all over England, Scotland and Wales.
