The Porsche 928 was unveiled in 1977 at the Geneva Motor Show and was originally intended to launch a new direction for Porsche, focusing on producing grand tourers and gradually replacing the flagship 911 model. The 928 launched with the 4.5l ‘M28’ V8 engine mated to either a 3 speed automatic or 5 speed manual transaxle. The design consisted of a steel body with aluminium wings, doors and bonnet as well as plastic front and rear bumpers intended to absorb minor impacts without deformation. The interior was spacious and leather clad with 2+2 seating and large boot space. The unique ‘Pasha’ chequered velvet trim option was offered to celebrate Porsche’s racing heritage, resembling the motion of a chequered flag. The 928 was a successful new model for Porsche that never replaced the 911 in the end but sold alongside it to a new market. Over 60,000 were produced between 1977 and 1995.
This example is one of the last of the early 928 model, which ceased production in 1982. Externally this is the most minimalistic model, void of any lip spoilers or wings that would follow. The body is painted in it’s original colour of Pacific Blue Metallic with ‘tele-dial’ alloy wheels. The interior is attractively trimmed in blue leather with the Pasha velvet option and blue carpets.
Being an early model, this car is fitted with the original 4.5l V8 and 3 speed automatic gearbox which pulls well with smooth power delivery, a grand tourer indeed! The engine was serviced in 2024 and also had a new water pump and alternator fitted.
The car is indicating 76,100 miles, covering just 3,000 since 2007 which is the oldest recorded MOT. The dashboard is displaying a tail lamp warning light as photographed however all tail and head lamps are functioning correctly. The history file includes invoicing from 2020 to 2024 as well as a Spanish invoice for a large amount of work in 2016. Also included are original brochures and literature as well as the paperwork wallet with a breakdown cover card confirming the original colour.
Still a very capable car today and less common today in it’s earliest, purest form with a large cabin for luggage or golf clubs and space for a taller driver. A 928 is at home anywhere from car shows to motorways for long distance road trips!
